Isabella FOSTER
Isabella Foster is an emerging artist in nipaluna / Hobart. Working across a combined practice of drawing, painting, video, performance and installation, Foster examines and parodies the ways historic power structures reveal themselves in the present.
Interested in the ways current social narratives sample the past and simultaneously remix futures, Foster’s practice involves observing specific environments (cultural, conceptual, online, subterranean), and allowing the limits of such spaces to set the conditions and boundaries for her artwork as feedback.
After graduating BFA, Foster was was invited to present her practice-based research in a 2018 PhD Arts and Cultural Studies conference in Lisbon, Portugal. During her Lisbon residency, she participated in the 2019 Maumaus Escola des Artes postgraduate arts Lab, which comprised collaborative think-tank forums on art theory, practice, and philosophy.
Since returning to nipaluna Foster has exhibited at Sawtooth ARI, Goodgrief ARI, and Sydney Contemporary, and is presenting her debut solo exhibition, “Galaxy Brain” at Moonah Arts Centre in 2022. Isabella Foster is a current recipient of the Contemporary Arts Tasmania studio residency 2021-2022.
