Liesel Zink is an award-winning choreographer interested in the body in shifting landscapes. Seeking to engage new and diverse audiences in meaningful arts experiences she creates large-scale dance and sound work in public space and uses her process as an opportunity for artistic, cultural and intergenerational exchange.
Liesel received the 2017 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance for her public space work project ‘The Stance’ which has toured extensively around Australia as well as internationally at Sziget Festival (Hungary) 2017, Ansan Street Arts Festival (South Korea) 2017 and City Contemporary Dance Festival (Hong Kong) 2019.
Passionate about building artistic development opportunities for independent artists, 2019 sees Liesel produce a Hong Kong / Australia Independent Dance project which builds a partnership between West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA, Hong Kong), City Contemporary Dance Festival (CCDF, Hong Kong), Supercell Festival of Contemporary Dance (Qld) and Metro Arts (QLD). This project encompasses a range of different projects aimed at strengthening the relationships with the communities in which we present work including (but not exclusive to) a cultural exchange project between two Queensland and two Hong Kong independent dancers and producing ‘Hong Kong Stories: A triple Bill’ at Supercell (Qld) showcasing works by three Independent choreographers from Hong Kong.
2019 has seen Liesel travel to Ukraine to choreograph a new site-specific work with local dancers at Mystetski Arsenal and she will soon undertake a La Boite /MDH residency for development of a new dance / science / poetry project Shorts.
In 2018 Liesel premiered new dance and science collaboration Inter at Flowstate, and joined Force Majeure as a lead artist in development of their site-specific work FLOCK. She’s also been commissioned to create works for Australian Dance Companies including Tasdance, EDC and LINK Dance Company.
As a producer, Liesel is currently working with Performing Lines for Amrita Hepi’s 2019 tour of A Call To Dance to Melbourne, Perth, Germany and New Zealand. She also was the original Creative Producer of Michael Smith’s Cowboy which has toured to Germany and Spain with The Farm.
