SITUATE NORTH – FAQ

Key questions relating to SITUATE NORTH are listed below. Please regularly check for updates as new questions may be published during the CALL OUT period.

What is SITUATE NORTH?

The SITUATE NORTH Lab is a nine month program of activity to scaffold five northern based early and mid-career artists and creative practitioners to undertake the research and development of new place-based and COVID safe artworks for Tasmanian festivals and presentation partners. The program will begin alongside Mona Foma Festival in January 2021 and culminate at the Regional Arts Australia conference at Junction Arts Festival in September 2021.

When and where is SITUATE NORTH?

The dates for SITUATE NORTH are:

  • Expressions of interest open: 1st December 2020

  • Expressions of interest close: 31st December 2020

  • Successful participants notified: 8th January 2021

  • Introduction session - Welcome to Country and Cultural Awareness: 19th January 2021 (times TBC)

  • Lab 1 sessions: 15th - 19th February 2021 (times TBC)

  • Lab 2 sessions: 26th - 28th May 2021 (times TBC)

  • Artlands session: 1st - 5th September 2021

*Note: You must be able to attend the session in full over these dates to be considered eligible for the program.

The locations for SITUATE NORTH are: Launceston and Devonport.

What is the role of a provocateur? 

A Provocateur is an established artist who will work closely with the SITUATE NORTH Lab participants to challenge, explore and develop their ideas, process and art practice. Provocateurs will ensure that all artists have the freedom to experiment and test their ideas within a supportive and critically challenging environment. 

Will I be paid?

We will cover the following expenses for participants taking part in the SITUATE NORTH Lab including:

  • An Honorarium of $2,500

  • A contribution of $2,500 to R&D of your project idea.

  • A contribution to travel costs if you are required to be away from your home.

APPLYING TO SITUATE NORTH

How do I apply to SITUATE NORTH? 

EOI Applications open online from December 1, 2020 and close at midnight 31st December 2020 AEDT. You can submit an EOI application HERE 

PLEASE NOTE - Late applications will not be accepted. 

Who is eligible to apply? 

This opportunity is for early to mid-career Northern Tasmanian artists and creative practitioners across all artforms. For the purposes of this application, this is artists in the first 10 years of their practice. 

Applicants must be:

  • An artist or creative practitioner who at the time of application, resides in Northern Tasmania and is in the first 10 years of their practice.

  • Australian citizens or have permanent resident status in Australia. Proof of citizenship or residency may be required.

  • Over 18 years of age by the application date

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, artists with disability and artists of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. 

  • Reside in one of the following locations: Break O’Day, Burnie, Central Coast, Circular Head, Devonport, Dorset, George Town, Kentish, Latrobe, Launceston, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands, Waratah-Wynyard, West Tamar.

Who is not eligible to apply? 

You are ineligible to apply for this program if:

  • You are not a Northern Tasmanian Resident.

  • You are a senior or established artist.

Do I have to be less than 30 years of age?

No, age is not an eligibility requirement for SITUATE NORTH. 

Can I apply as a collective or group?

We can only accommodate a limited number of participants. We recommend that you apply as an individual and list that you are part of a collective or group. 

I am transitioning from one creative practice to another and am in the early stages of my new creative practise. Can I apply?

Yes, you may be eligible to apply if you are transitioning from one creative practice to another. You will need to clearly articulate your experience in the creative practice you are transitioning into and proposing for the SITUATE NORTH Lab. Your support material should demonstrate your professional experience in the creative practice you are applying for.

Do I have to propose an artwork for the EOI?

No, you are not expected to apply to SITUATE NORTH with an artwork proposal. The purpose of the Lab is to support artists in developing strong and well-resolved project ideas and concepts that respond to a variety of festival sites, audiences, conditions and economies. 

I don't have a website. Do I still need to provide URL support material?    

Yes. If you don't have your own website there are many free Internet services for uploading material. Some popular sites include YouTube and Vimeo for moving images, Soundcloud for music and sound, google photos or dropbox for moving and still images. Please note that we will not be downloading this support material for distribution but rather providing our assessors with links to view this material online. Please make sure your support material is viewable when the URL link is clicked. If your URL requires a password to view the material, please include it with your application.

How will my application be assessed? 

Your application will be assessed against the following selection criteria. 

  • Eligibility 

  • Artistic calibre (primarily assessed on the basis of examples of previous work and artist CV).

  • Potential for the SITUATE NORTH Lab to contribute to your career development including acquiring skills in cross-artform collaboration and creating work for site-specific environments.

  • Potential to participate in consultative and collaborative situations.

  • Assessments of applications and decisions are made primarily on the basis of the information supplied by you in your application and accompanying support material.  The applications are assessed by the SITUATE NORTH assessment and provocateur team. 

When will the successful participants be announced?

Successful SITUATE NORTH applicants will be notified by email on 8th January 2021
