Sophie Ambler is an emerging experimental artist, producer and project manager from Lutruwita/Tasmania, now based on Kaurna Country in South Australia. Her arts career began at 16 with a flight to Antarctica as a Tasmanian state youth art prize winner, shortly followed by curating and independently producing a site-specific youth arts exhibition beneath Nipaluna/Hobart’s Princes Park at just 18 years old.
Since then, Sophie has spent more than a decade working across experimental arts and festival production, predominantly with the Museum of Old and New Art and the broader Tasmanian arts sector, as well as festivals interstate and overseas. She has also toured as a performative stage manager with live art duo Pony Express.
Her practice is often grounded in humour, participatory, site-responsive and socially engaged work. Independent productions include cult variety show The Shitshow Cabaret, immersive comedy Standing Room Only, and experimental club night ZZZZ, with works presented through festivals including Junction Arts and Adelaide Fringe.
Sophie is currently producing waynapuni pools, a major participatory artwork by artist Benjamin Paul and Aboriginal students from Montrose Bay High, in which discarded cars were transformed into functioning saunas, spas and steam rooms for a series of public bathing sessions. Through SITUATE, she looks forward to establishing her own contemporary arts practice and strengthening her voice as an artist.
